Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, located in Northeast Houston, was Founded and was organized by Rev. Edward Collins Jr., a native Texan.
Born February 23, 1944 and reared in Bryan College Station, Texas – Brazos Bottoms, son to the late Edward Sr. and Gertrude Collins. Rev. Edward Collins graduated from Lincoln High School.
Rev. Collins accepted his call to the gospel ministry and preached his first sermon on August 11, 1974. Thereafter he attended Silver Union Baptist Seminary of Texas Inc. where he received his Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Divinity degrees.
As pastor, Rev. Edward Collins lead a congregation whose member’s support and serve their community in a multiplicity of ways. The church began with only twelve members and has grown to the current membership of approximately 1,200. The expansion of the current edifice along with pending construction serves as testimonies of the Church’s spiritual and financial growth. The current sanctuary, offices, classrooms, and fellowship hall sit on three of the church’s ten acres of land.
As a community leader, Rev. Edward Collins serves on the Advisory Board of Settegast Health Clinic of Harris County Hospital District; Council-at-Large member of Harris County Hospital District; and a Member of the Northeast YMCA, Chaplain of Precinct 3 police department and currently serves as President of the Northeast Minister’s Alliance.
Rev. Edward Collins married his wife Ocie Collins on December 4, 1964 and has been joined together for over forty-eight years and has been a great asset to Pastor Edward Collins and his ministry. Ocie Collins has assisted in any area needed with tireless effort, commitment and patience. She has been a phenomenal wife, mother, and confidant to the ministry of her husband and the Sweet Home Church. They were blessed with three children, Edward III, Karen and Gregory and now delight in finding themselves grandparents to three grandchildren, Edward, Ciara, and Chassidie. As of January 1, 2013, Pastor Edward Collins retired as Senior Pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church after thirty-seven years of faithful service as currently assumes role as Pastor Emeritus/Founder.
anuary 1, 2013 Pastor Edward Collins retired as Senior Pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. As of October 20, 2013, Pastor Edward Collins was installed as the Senior Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church of Madisonville.
